Jirí Menzel - Vesnicko má stredisková aka My Sweet Little Village (1985)

Comedy about the people who inhabit a small town. For years the overbearing Pavek has endured Otik, the "town idiot," sharing his meals and the front seat of their dump truck. But Otik is such a sweet-natured fool that Pavek, exasperated as he becomes, always relents on his threats to find another partner. This Laurel and Hardy-like pair are at the heart of a comedy which finds humor in an abundance of everyday situations. The town doctor regularly wrecks his car because he's admiring the scenery, a romantic teenager develops a hopeless crush on his sister's schoolteacher, and an adulterous housewife and her boyfriend are just one step ahead of her suspicious, hot-headed husband.





Jiri Menzel of Closely Watched Trains fame directed the sweet little Czechoslovakian comedy/drama My Sweet Little Village. The life's blood of the titular community is a collective farm. Marian Labuda is the farm's truck driver, and also the partner-protector of Janos Ban, who is the village idiot. Like everyone else in the village, Labuda has watched out for Ban and covered up his mistakes, but in recent weeks the situation has become intolerable and Labuda demands a new partner. As Ban prepares to be relocated to Prague, we cut away to various subplots, all of which lead to the same conclusion: the hapless Ban has always been the "glue" that has held the community together. A contrite Labuda heads for Prague to invite Ban to come back home. Originally titled Vesnicko Ma Stediskova, My Sweet Little Village was a 1986 Academy Award "best foreign-language picture" nominee. Rakosnik, un retrasado mental (el tonto del pueblo), trabaja tranquilamente con Pavek, conductor de un camión de carga, hasta que sus constantes distracciones y su carácter simple agotan la paciencia de éste, quien le anuncia que prescindirá de sus servicios. Al mismo tiempo, un ejecutivo praguense se interesa en conseguir en el campo una casa de descanso y la de Rakosnik representa una buena oportunidad, por lo que comienza a tramitar que éste se mude a la gran ciudad. El tema se vuelve un asunto de discusión entre la gente del pueblo: ¿Permitirán que, con todo y su deficiencia, Rakosnik abandone su medio natural y sus queridas palomas para irse a vivir a un ambiente hostil que de seguro acabará con él? En lo que resuelve la incógnita, aparecen una serie de personajes que se manejan entre sí como si fueran una gran familia, los cuales comparten alegremente sus pequeños triunfos y sus placeres cotidianos, así como se soportan mutuamente sus debilidades o defectos. Můžete se tu setkat se svérázným a okouzlujícím doktorem Skružným, řidičem družstevního náklaďáku Pávkem a jeho závozníkem, mentálně zaostalým Otíkem, ke kterému se Pávek chová s jako k vlastnímu, i když mu Otík ve své prostotě připravuje jeden malér za druhým, žárlivým hrubiánem Turkem, jeho ženou Janou a jejím milencem, zootechnikem Kašparem, akademickým malířem Rybou a řadou dalších svérázných postaviček obývajících střediskovou obec Křečovice. Jejich osudy se proplétají v řadě komických i poněkud hořkých epizod obalujících hlavní motiv Pávka, který sice po řadě nehod odmítne jezdit s mentálně zaostalým Otíkem...
