Alain Delon stars as Marc, a small-time swindler and Casanova who finds himself on the hit-list of an American gangster. He escapes the first attempt on his life in Monte Carlo and hides out serving as a chauffeur for the married Barbara (Lola Albright). Marc seems to have gotten into a bigger mess when he finds that Barbara's husband was murdered by her lover Vincent (Robert Oumansky), whom she is now hiding in her chateau. Barbara is planning to pass Marc off as her lover, hoping he will be knocked off by the authorities rather than Vincent. Attempting to save Marc — or just complicating matters — is Barbara's niece Melinda (Jane Fonda), who has fallen in love with Marc. If Marc plays his cards right, he may be able to get out of his uncomfortable predicament.





A vindictive American gangster boss is far from amused when he discovers that his wife has been entertaining herself with a French playboy named Marc. Finding the playboy proves to be easy but, just before the villains can do their worst, he effects a remarkable escape. Fearing for his life, Marc hides out in a Church asylum for down-and-outs. Here, he meets a wealthy widow, Barbara, who engages him as her chauffeur. Barbara lives in a grand house on the Côte-d’Azur with her poor cousin, Melinda, whom she treats as a servant girl. Un jefe mafioso americano busca venganza cuando descubre que su esposa lo ha engañado con un playboy francés llamado Marc. Encontrar el playboy resulta ser fácil, pero, justo antes de que los pandilleros puedan terminar su trabajo, el playboy se escapa. Temiendo por su vida, Marc se esconde en un asilo para pobres. Allí conoce a una viuda rica, Barbara, quien lo contrata como su chofer. Barbara vive en una gran casa en la Côte-d'Azur con su prima pobre, Melinda, a quien trata como a una sirvienta. Marc sospecha que no todo es lo que parece y se da cuenta pronto de que él es un peón en un juego muy peligroso de engaño y venganza...





Marc a eu une liaison avec une riche Américaine. Le mari de celle-ci le fait poursuivre en France par des tueurs. Remarqué dans un asile de clochards par une autre Américaine, Barbara, il est embauché par elle comme chauffeur. Mais certains indices lui font deviner qu'il n'a été choisi que pour favoriser la fuite de Vincent, l'amant de Barbara, qui a tué son mari et vit depuis deux ans claustré dans la luxueuse villa: Marc, une fois connu en ville, sera éliminé et Vincent, qui a sa stature, passera pour lui, le temps de s'enfuir. Compte-tenu des impératifs d'un genre dont les héros sont obligatoirement déplaisants, ce film dépeint avec cruauté et, parfois, avec complaisance sensuelle, le déchirement du couple quand l'amour est exclu.
