The most entertaining thing at Cannes to date has been the press book for Jean-Luc Godard’s Film Socialisme (screening in the Un Certain Regard category), which contains an interview with a journalist named Renaud Deflins. I say interview; others might say blethering opacity.
A typical question: “Whereof geometry?” A typical answer: “Euclid understood the language of the Pyramids, not Aristotle.”
It’s all of a piece with the film itself. Described as a “symphony in three movements”, it’s an often good-looking and multi-lingual, tightly sound-edited collage-work that begins aboard a massive cruise liner and drifts through myriad times and spaces, including Egypt, Naples, Odessa and Palestine.
These journey stops, accompanied by a voiceover that alludes to Beckett, Levi -Strauss and a library of barely digested philosophers, are conceptual as much as they’re real. But what are those concepts? Planes falling from the sky, smudgily pixellated images of public dancing, YouTube images of talking cats, mention of the Holocaust - followed by the words Kiss Me Stupid in bright lettering.
