No film in 2005 had a higher profile in Japan than Always - Sunset On Third Street, scooping twelve out of a possible thirteen awards at the Japanese Academy Awards in March 2006. The film uses a combination of elaborately constructed sets and cutting edge CGI work to recreate Tokyo in the 1950s. It is a heartfelt, nostalgic look back at a time when the country was changing and developing, soon to experience an economic boom that would forever alter Japanese culture. Always - Sunset on Third Street isn't particularly innovative when it comes to plot or characterization, but it is an effective melodrama, and in its affectionate and intricate recreation of postwar Tokyo, it's a technological marvel. Of course, its sepia-toned vision is romanticized, with even the churlish, arrogant candy shop owner/poet Chagawa, introduced urgently filling out losing raffle tickets with the words "No Luck" for the local children, eventually coming around to the power of love and sacrifice. His storyline has a good deal of emotional resonance, and it's far more carefully developed than that of Mutsuko, the country girl who comes to the city to find her fortune, and initially has problems with the Suzuki family at their auto repair shop. Director Yamazaki is not really about subtlety and restraint. He's a bit of a fantasist. The neighborhood tapestry he weaves has a few holes in it, but the movie still works on that "gut" level, as he pushes all the right buttons with crowd-pleasing aplomb. Josh Ralske, ALLMOVIE

Thanks COnnie, this looks good. I'm a bit confused though. The res is 720x304, which suggests 2.35:1 aspect ratio. But the screens look 4:3.
Can you advise what the aspect ratio is please?

Unfortunately, Parts 3 and 15 are corrupted. I downloaded them twice from Mediafire, but still the same problem. Please reupload them.

I downloaded the archives that include the corrupted files from Megaupload (Parts 1-3 and Parts 13-15) and now everything is Ok. So the problem lies in the parts 3 and 15 from Mediafire.

I encoded this using Handbrake from my DVD9, which says on the back "Widescreen 16:9". But the actual movie ratio was much narrower than 16:9 so I cropped the top and bottom to remove black bars. The end result is the video has "square pixels" which equates as you suggest to a ratio of approximately 2.35:1. All the media players I have display it at the correct aspect ratio, and as far as I can tell, there is nothing in the video iteslf that defines the DAR so I am thinking that your media player displays at 4:3 by default when there is no DAR present. This may be able to be corrected by using "MPEG4 Modifier" from Moitah.net.

Thanks for the feedback. Mediafire parts 3 and 15 have now been replaced with new uploads.

Just a further note on the encoding. The DVD I used was a DVD9 "Official release" store-bought version from Thailand. However, the video quality was not as good as I expected and I suspect what was done was the video stream was re-encoded down to 5GB to make space on the disc for a Thai audio dub. So the quality wasn't there that could justify a higher bitrate in the encode. I don't think making a larger file size would have increased the quality all that much. So I stuck to the 2CD size.

Also if there is any interest in the original DVD subtitles (IDX/SUB or SUP) I can upload those.
... or the Thai audio. :)

Thanks Connie. No, my media player is fine (besides I watch downloads on my DVD/DivX player on my TV, not on my PC!).
I've not actually downloaded this yet, but will do now after your reassuring advice.
The reason I was asking is because all your screenshots on this page are 4:3 ratio.
Yeah, I use Handbrake too - it's my favourite one. You're absolutely right to crop away those black bars (use auto cropping). 720x304 is perfect for 2.35:1, and I use 720x400 for 16:9. Looks like you've made the right choice.
Using square pixels and making the dimensions fit the aspect ratio means no further AR encoding is necessary, so I'm sure your file is perfect!
Incidentally, you *can* encode any aspect ratio into a DivX / XviD file - use MPEGModifier. But I rarely bother, as all my rips default to the correct AR due to the dimensions I rip to (within a couple of pixels error margin).

Sorry, my misunderstanding. I didn't realise you were referring to the images on this page. I should have made it clearer that they were not screenshots. If you hover your mouse over the images then the text "Movie publicity photo" should appear. I got them from the official website because I was too lazy to do screenshots. (When you click to enlarge them, you will also see that they are obviously not screenshots.)
