Anthony Harvey - The Lion In Winter (1968)

Christmas 1183 - an aging and conniving King Henry II plans a reunion where he hopes to name his successor. He summons the following people for the holiday: his scheming but imprisoned wife, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine; his mistress, Princess Alais, whom he wishes to marry; his three sons (Richard, Geoffrey, and John), all of whom desire the throne; and the young but crafty King Philip of France (who is also Alais' brother). With the fate of Henry's empire at stake, everybody engages in their own brand of deception and treachery to stake their claim.







One of the joys which movies provide too rarely is the opportunity to see a literate script handled intelligently. "The Lion in Winter" triumphs at that difficult task; not since "A Man for All Seasons" have we had such capable handling of a story about ideas. But "The Lion in Winter" also functions at an emotional level, and is the better film, I think. (Roger Ebert)









El león en invierno
Navidad de 1183, el envejecido y confabulador rey Enrique II organiza una reunión en la que espera nombrar a su sucesor. Se convoca a las siguientes personas para la fiesta: su mujer intrigante (y cautiva) Leonor de Aquitania, su amante, la princesa Alais, quien desea casarse, sus tres hijos (Ricardo, Godofredo y Juan), todos ellos aspirantes al trono, y también el joven pero astuto rey Felipe de Francia (quien también es hermano de Alais). Con el destino del imperio de Henry en juego, todos se involucran en un juego de engaño y traición para conseguir el trofeo deseado.





O Leão no Inverno
No Natal de 1183, o Rei Henrique II da Inglaterra (Peter O’Toole) promove uma reunião de família com seus três filhos e até mesmo com a Rainha Eleanor da Aquitânia (Katharine Hepburn), de quem ele está separado há vários anos e a mantém detida em um castelo distante, para impedir que ela interfira politicamente no seu reino. A razão deste encontro é para decidir quem o sucederá no trono...
