Henry Hathaway - Diplomatic Courier (1952)

Department of State courier Mike Kelly ends up in postwar hotbed Trieste after failing to collect a package from a colleague. The Military Police are happy for him to get more involved, but things get a bit tough. After all, he is just a postman. This is one of the best of the post-war intrigue/suspense flicks. What all of these have in common is the gritty black-and-white look of cities that haven't recovered from the war, usually in ruins, to varying degrees. (Think The Third Man, The Search, Berlin Express) There are no ruins in Diplomatic Courier, but you still get that shadowy, melancholy, sinister, exotic atmosphere that marks the genre...







When undercover secret agent Tyrone Power is thwarted in his efforts to obtain a vital document with details of the Russian invasion of Yugoslavia by the death of the courier at the hands of two Russian agents, played by Mario Siletti and Charles Buchinski (aka Charles Bronson), it becomes his duty to go after the murderers and retrieve the papers. With more loops and turnabouts than a snake, the plot has surprises with agents, double agents, mistaken information and is, all in all, a surprisingly exciting spy vehicle. Michael Ansara and Lee Marvin also make brief appearances in this early cold war story. A script with a lot of holes in it is pulled off by the fine performances and tight direction given in this film. (Tana Hobart - AMG)

Tyrone Power interpreta a Mike Kells, un correo diplomático que trabaja para el Departamento de Estado, enviado desde París a Salzburgo a encontrarse con el espía americano Sam Crew (James Millican) al que le une una larga amistad, de manera que este último pueda pasarle la información de alto secreto llamada “Semper Project”. Ciertos problemas harán que no lleguen a reunirse y comience una emocionante persecución en busca del espía y los documentos. Kells, un hombre metódico y casi maniático que lleva dos relojes y anota todo lo que ocurre en una pequeña libreta, debe agudizar su ingenio al verse envuelto en una aventura sorteando la amenaza de espías soviéticos y siendo manejado por el servicio secreto americano representado en el film por el coronel Cagle (Stephen McNally).
