Alberto Lattuada - Il Mulino del Po aka The Mill on the Po (1949)

A rich girl, engaged to a well-to-do farmer, ends up penniless and is forced to go to work for her fiancee's relatives. We are in the Po Valley in the mid 1800's. Peasant unrest, carried to extremes by both workers and landowners, leads to violence.





Il Mulino del Po was based on a novel by Riccardo Baccheli. Essentially an elaborate retelling of the old story about a pair of young lovers kept separated by family rivalries, the film is distinguished by its evocative location photography and tight, mathematically precise editing. Director Alberto Lattuada also manages to insert what one historian has labelled his "progressive ideology" into the proceedings. The romantic plotline is placed in context within the events leading up to the famous Po Valley farmers' strike of 1876; characteristically, Lattuada offers a topical political slant to the facts at hand. As in his other neorealist exercises, Lattuada manages to bridge the gap between "art" and box-office appeal in Il Mulino del Po. (AMG)





El molino del Po
A la orilla del río Po, en Italia, se encuentra un molino que lleva trabajando muchos años y que ha sido propiedad de varias generaciones de una misma familia. Los molineros desarrollan su trabajo y su vida en ese lugar, una existencia que viene acompañada de rivalidades entre las familias de los campesinos, y los problemas políticos de la Italia de principios de siglo.





Berta Scarceni è promessa sposa ad Orbino Verginesi e il fidanzamento viene festeggiato sul mulino galleggiante degli Scarceni. Princivalle, il fratello di Berta, per timore dei controlli della finanza, incendia il mulino. Inizia così un periodo di miseria e di odio per le due famiglie, che sfocerà nella tragedia e nel delitto.
