Claude Miller - Garde à vue aka The Grilling Re-post (1981)

Inspector Gallien is investigating the rape and murder of two little girls. The only suspect is attorney Jerome Martinaud, but the evidence against him is circumstantial. As the city celebrates New Year's Eve, Gallien calls Martinaud to his office and interrogates him for hour after hour while Martinaud continues to maintain his innocence. We learn all about the evidence; we meet Martinaud's wife and learn all about the rift between the two; but will we, and Gallien, finally learn whether Martinaud is guilty?





This brilliantly taut psychological thriller from director Claude Miller features a remarkable confrontation between two leading figures in French cinema, Lino Ventura and Michel Serrault. The minimalist style of the film heightens the tension, and an enigmatic portrayal by Romy Schneider, plus an excellent script, make this a stylish and inspired piece of cinema. This film is much better than its mediocre American re-make, Under Suspicion (2000), which starred Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman. (James Travers, Films de France)





Arresto preventivo
Una noche de Año Nuevo, el inspector Antoine Gallien, secundado por Belmont, su colaborador, recibe en la comisaría al notario Martinaud. Acaban de ser descubiertos los cuerpos de dos niñas asesinadas y violadas. Ahora bien, Martinaud conocía a una de ellas. Este último trata de jugar al personaje influyente, pero cambia rápidamente de conducta cuando el inspector le demuestra que su ausencia de coartada lo convierte en el sospechoso número uno...



Deux fillettes de huit ans ont été violées et assassinées en l'espace d'une semaine. Ne possédant que très peu d'indices, l'inspecteur Gallien (Lino Ventura) et son adjoint Belmont (Guy Marchand) décident en plein réveillon du nouvel an de convoquer à la PJ un notable de la ville, le notaire Jérôme Martinaud (Michel Serrault), qui a découvert le corps d'une des victimes…
