Leos Carax - Pola X (1999)

Pierre lives with his mother Marie in a castle in Normandy near the edges of Seine. They are very beautiful, rich, carefree and they like themselves. Every morning, Pierre leaves on the inherited bike of his father to visit Lucie, his fiancé. One night, Marie announces to Pierre that she arranged the date for his marriage to Lucie. Pierre leaves to announce the good news to his fiancé. On the way, in the forest, appears a funereal beauty. She speaks with a strong accent of the countries of the East: "Pierre.. you are not the only child, I am your sister, Isabelle."

Pola X is the first film since 1991's acclaimed 'Les Amants du Pont Neuf' from Leos Carax, one of French cinema's most daring, creative and controversial directors.



Recently deceased Guillaume Depardieu stars as Pierre, whose life is shattered by the revelation that he has a sister, Isabelle (Katerina Golubeva), whose existence has been kept secret by his mother (Catherine Deneuve). Mysterious and mournfully beautiful, Isabelle is the illusory figure that has haunted his dreams.



Through her, Pierre seeks to uncover the truth of the world, its lies, masquerades and ambiguities - a destructive quest that threatens to consume him and those he loves.



Haunting, passionate and powerful, Carax's dazzling return to cinema has been hailed as a masterpiece and features spectacular photography and a music score by legendary rock recluse Scott Walker.



The film is loosely based on the Herman Melville novel Pierre: or, The Ambiguities. The film title is an acronym of the French title of the novel, Pierre ou les ambiguïtés, plus a Roman numeral "X" indicating the tenth version of the script draft that was used to make the film. Pola X has been associated with the New French Extremity.



Actualización de una novela poco leída de Melville, Pola X es un descenso al Infierno en clave marginal. Carax, niño terrible del cine francés, se dispara por el lado expresionista y de las situaciones límites. Un escritor exitoso (Guillaume Depardieu) que vive en ambiente aristocrático con su madre (Catherine Deneuve) descubre que tiene una media hermana marginal (la bella Yekaterina Golubyova), y entonces renuncia a su ambiente y va a vivir en un suburbio parisino donde imperan la violencia, el racismo y la pobreza. La realidad entera se transfigura con este cambio, del erotismo al éxito editorial, y la posibilidad de erigir comunidades alternas, cerradas y en donde el ícono sonoro es el rock industrial. Carax recorre la senda desesperada y pasional de Dostoyevski o Kafka y no el proverbial cartesianismo francés.
