Jacques Rivette - L'Amour par Terre aka Love on the Ground (1984)

An eccentric playwright (Kalfon) enlists the services of two international actresses (Chaplin and Birkin) to perform in a production to be staged within the confines of his mansion. Life begins to imitate art as the play’s scripted love triangle is transposed onto the relationship between the three leads. Rivette received criticism upon the release of the film for its similarities to his earlier success, Céline and Julie Go Boating. While it uses many of the same stylistic elements as its predecessor, Love on the Ground continues to raise provocative questions as Rivette explores the thin line between performance and reality.





The avant-garde founder of French New Wave Jacques Rivette, offers an on-going treatise of film versus theater in this basically non-story about two actresses and a director, or from another perspective, a play and a film. In the opening scenario, a couple come out of a bathroom and are surprised by a group of people. It turns out that the people are the audience watching a play performed in a private home. Among the spectators is Clément (Jean-Pierre Kalfon) a director who invites two actresses (Jane Birkin and Geraldine Chaplin) to his home for the following Saturday, to work on a performance. Clément was having an affair with Béatrice (Isabelle Linnartz) who has apparently disappeared. A magician named Paul (André Dussolier) is his current lover and lives in Clément's home. After the actresses arrive, they find themselves influenced by Paul's magic and start to see their future, while the story they are enacting stays fairly close to Clément's own life. After many rehearsals over one week's time, the play is performed while actual changes happen in the corresponding characters in Clément's life -- until the play within a play ends in an interesting, controversial, yet logical manner.

Tras la representación en formato teatro de apartamento de una de sus obras, el autor teatral Clément Roquemaure (Jean-Pierre Kalfon) propone a los actores, Charlotte (Géraldine Chaplin), Emily (Jane Birkin) y Silvano (Facundo Bo), participar en la representación de su siguiente obra. Para ello deberán trasladarse a la casa de Roquemaure, en las afueras y ensayar durante una semana la obra, de la que sólo conocerán el final en el momento de su representación. En la misma casa viven Paul (André Dussollier), mago de profesión, que mantiene con Roquemaure una relación entre la amistad y la rivalidad, y Virgil (Laszlo Szabo), el mayordomo. En el curso de la semana se suceden los ensayos, al tiempo que las actrices van descubriendo los secretos de una casa en la que se oyen extraños sonidos y en la que existe una habitación prohibida. El espectro de una mujer desaparecida, Béatrice (Isabelle Linnartz), flota tanto sobre la obra como en las relaciones de los personajes...





Un auteur de théâtre, Clément Roquemaure (Jean-Pierre Kalfon), fait à trois comédiens, Emily (Jane Birkin), Charlotte (Géraldine Chaplin) et Silvano (Facundo Bo), qui ont du mal à trouver des engagements, une étrange proposition : il les invite à passer une semaine dans sa villa de la région parisienne pour répéter sa nouvelle pièce, dont la fin reste à écrire. Roquemaure partage sa villa avec un ami (ou rival ?), Paul (André Dussollier), ainsi qu'avec un mystérieux majordome, Virgil (Laszlo Szabo), surnommé "à pas de loup" pour sa capacité à entrer dans une pièce sans que personne ne l'entende. Peu à peu, alors qu'Emily et Charlotte tombent sous le charme de Roquemaure, puis de Paul, et rivalisent pour gagner les faveurs des deux hommes, elles découvrent que la villa comporte des pièces secrètes où des bruits bizarres se font entendre, et elles s'interrogent sur le fantôme qui pourrait bien hanter la chambre interdite. Est-ce celui de l'ancienne femme de Roquemaure, à laquelle la pièce inachevée semble adressée ?
