Melina Sordino (Kristen Stewart) is entering the notoriously difficult time that is the freshman year of high school. She is no average troubled youth, however, for she refuses to utter a word, ever since a party to celebrate the end of 8th grade resulted in a violent encounter for the young girl. Now, ostracized by her schoolmates, alienated from her mother (Elizabeth Perkins) and father (D.B. Sweeney), and feeling entirely alone, she retreats into an interior world. But hope presents itself in the form of empathetic art teacher Mr. Freeman (Steve Zahn), who accepts Melinda's silence but pushes her towards other means of self-expression...
L'adolescente Melinda Sordino entre au lycée avec un grand sentiment de rejet et devient pratiquement muette. Ses camarades et amis l'appellent "criarde", parce qu'elle a appelé la police pendant une fête ; elle ne parle pas à sa mère, qui est une accro au travail et tout le temps occupée. Elle a aussi des problèmes avec un enseignant très radical. Elle trouve un grand réconfort chez son professeur d'arts M. Freeman et son ami d'école, David Petrakis et se rappelle son expérience traumatisante à l'école d'été, quand elle a été violée, apprenant à la gérer et à revivre.
