In brillanter Weise operiert Kurosawa gekonnt mit allen emotionalen Tonlagen, von tragischer Situationsverdichtung bis humorvoller Ironie, von psychologischer Detailstudie zu slapstickartigen Einlagen. Er zeigt eine erkrankte Gesellschaft, in der alte Rollenklischees nur noch eine unkontrollierbare Folge von Fehlhandlungen und Mißverständnissen in Bewegung setzten. Reich an Detailbeobachtung und subtiler Gesellschaftskritik schafft dieser Film ein unter die Haut gehendes Geflecht des Unbehagens, das das heutige Japan zeichnet. Aus Verachtung der Schwäche seines Vaters verdingt sich der ältere Sohn bei der US-Armee, naiv den Slogans der Freiheitsverteidigung glaubend. | “ | Tokyo Sonata echa una mirada sobre fenómenos que podríamos colocar bajo el acápite de eso que llamamos "globalización": relocalización de la estructura productiva en populosos países de ultramar, reclutamiento cosmopolita para fuerzas de despliegue rápido de potencias imperiales, ollas populares para desclasados cada vez más abundantes, etc. Con una simplicidad que remite a la parábola, pero que tratándose de un film de Kiyoshi Kurosawa podríamos considerar asimismo no es totalmente ajena al sobresalto del cine de género, resonancias de aquellos desarrollos de largo alcance terminan apilándose sobre la cotidianeidad antaño despreocupada de una familia japonesa de clase media.
