In Neya, a small Russian town close to the Volga river, Aist is a writer and a photographer. Aist's ancestors were the Merya, an indigenous Finno-Ugric tribe whose ways and traditions were largely abandoned with the rise of the Soviet Union. But Aist still remembers some of the key rituals of his forefathers. He and Miron, his employer and friend, work together at a paper industrial complex. When Miron’s young wife, Tanya, dies, he asks his employee and close friend to come help him with the body and wants her funeral to be in keeping with Merya traditions. This solemn process is performed in all its essential and surprising detail. They set out to take Tanya's body out to a spot near the Volga River, which was of great spiritual importance to the Merya people and near where Miron and Tanya enjoyed their honeymoon. When they reach their destination, they will cremate Tanya in accordance with Merya rites, and en route, Miron shares with Aist many stores (some quite intimate) of their lives together as man and wife.

A meditative road trip, a small, 77-minute jewel of art -- visual and verbal!

Thanks! This should be great! Expect amazing photography coming from the guy who also did the cinematography for all Zvyagintsev's movies (The Return, The Banishment, Elena). Well, at least I hope so ;)
