Chloé, une jeune lycéenne de 16 ans, est désespérée : ses rapports avec sa mère sont excécrables, et Ahmed dont elle est amoureuse ne fait pas attention à elle. Alors qu'elle traine le soir, comme à son habitude, dans les rues tristes de la ville, elle trouve sur un banc le sac de Katia. Elle se rend à l'adresse trouvée sur une pochette d'allumettes, et observe Katia qui danse seule... Une amitié va naitre peu à peu entre elles. Mais Chloé, qui est toujours en errance, rencontre Jean-Michel, jeune homme louche et charmeur, qui va l'entraîner dans la prostitution...

Paris. Débarquée de province avec la ferme intention de se faire une place au soleil du show-biz, l'aguicheuse Lucie n'hésite pas à user de ses charmes pour arriver à ses fins. Elle se lie bientôt d'amitié avec Nicolas, compositeur. Mais sa voix n'est pas à la hauteur de ses ambitions. Et quand la possibilité d'enregistrer un disque se présente, elle fait appel au talent de chanteuse de sa sœur jumelle, Marie, avec laquelle elle est pourtant en froid depuis longtemps. Un soir, après l'avoir remplacée sur scène, Marie retrouve celle-ci morte, défenestrée. Instinctivement, elle endosse l'identité de la défunte, dont la personnalité était pourtant si éloignée de la sienne...

François Manéri est un détective privé chargé de retrouver la trace d'une jeune femme disparue : Rachel Siprien. Six mois se sont écoulés depuis cette disparition. À la demande de la mère de cette dernière, François reprend l'affaire. La personnalité à multiples facettes de la jeune femme dessine un réseau complexe entre sa meilleure amie, Clarisse, son ex-petit ami, son beau-père, ses voisins et ceux qui l'ont connue de près ou de loin. François va ainsi naviguer de l'un à l'autre, pénétrer plus avant dans sa vie diurne et nocturne, espionner, poser des questions, et combler les blancs laissés volontairement par ses interlocuteurs.

(It's been six months since Rachel Siprien disappeared. At the request of Rachel's mother, private detective François takes over the investigation. The young woman's personality, complex and multi-faced, is part of a strange network made-up of her best friend Clarisse, her ex-boyfriend, her stepfather, her neigbours and everyone who knowns her well or even sightly. François begins to frequent these various friends and acquaintances, and penetrates Rachel's daytime and noctural habitat. He spies, asks disturbing questions, and fills in the blanks intentionally left by those he questions. His private life, already well complicated by an ex-wife and a mistress with a jealous husband, becomes more complicated by an affair with Clarisse and by problematic relations wih the police when Rachel's body is found. François takes the blows, dishes some out and little by little puts together a picture of the real Rachel Siprien. "Disappear means being eternally reborn".)
