An all-star cast (Vittorio Gassman, Renato Salvatori, Claudia Cardinale, Marcello Mastroianni, Totò) and jazzy score highlight this charming comedy, a deft satire of classic caper films like Rififi. Big Deal on Madonna Street hilariously details the plight of a sad-sack group of bumbling thieves and their desperate attempts to pull off the perfect heist.

Peppe, formerly a boxer, organizes the break-in of a pawnshop. Tiberio, an unemployed photographer, Mario, a receiver, the Sicilian Michele and Capannelle, an ex-jockey, are the other members of the gang. Though they are advised by Dante, a retired burglar, the task is not so easy... (http://imdb.com/title/tt0052216/plotsummary)

This movie is a classic comedy burglar caper (Woody Allen's "Small Time Crooks" was clearly inspired by this film). A collection of small time hoods gather to rob a pawn shop. Along the way, everything that could go wrong does in pretty hilarious fashion. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0052216/usercomments)

The original Italian title is "I Soliti Ignoti" which roughly translates to "The usual unidentified thieves" Mario Monicelli has made a great film here. In this film, A band of inept and clumsy thieves attempt to break into a safe. Instead, they manage to drill through the wrong wall, and create various acts of mayhem. The film has many scenes in it which are very funny. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0052216/usercomments)

The photography evokes a time when Italy was just beginning to rise from the chaos of WWII and it offers a wonderful emotional change from the neo-realism of many of the era's classic films. It's the best slapstick, tried and true but presented with style and timing before the shticks became clichés......when Cosimo attempts to rob a jewelry pawn shop and points his gun at the owner asking him if he knows what he has in his hand, the proprietor insouciantly takes the gun from his hand and says "A Beretta in poor condition" and offers him 1000 Lire for it. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0052216/usercomments)

Wonderful charachters, fantastic plot (from "Ne touchez pas le Grisbi"), stupendous soundtrack, amazing screenplay, perfect photography. And funny, funny, funny, but realistic in the Italy of post war poorness. (http://imdb.com/title/tt0052216/usercomments)

I guess this is the Criterion release (as "Big Deal on Madonna Street"). Am I right? And thanks for the share.

Hello FNB47 and thanks for your reply re: "Master And Margarita"
however something seems to be the matter (sorry for bothering you with this, but i am dying to see this version of "Master And Margarita"...)
the page you declare in your reply returns: "Requested document not found"

In your list of films 1-200 the film is linked to a different page->
http://www.avaxhome.ws/misc/master_i_margarita2_by_bortko.html
and this is where the files are only 8kb in size...
I have had no problems with any of your other posts, so I can't think what i might be doing wrong...

Again thanks for all your great (and time-comsuming) work, I appreciate it greatly, and really want to see "Master And Margarita"

greetings
ML

marveletter... btw... they are stored in RS.de (not RS.com) so... you cant use download managers if you dont have a RS.de account... right ?
(I may remote-upload them from RS.de to RS.com if you want... OK?)

Hello FNB47,

Thanks you much, I added .html, and now they got loaded it into my download manager properly and are downloading happily now, I didn't need to do this to any of the other films, whether RS.com or RS.de (I have an account for both), but no matter, they are now downloading and I a looking forward to watching this soon, thanks again!
greetings
ML
PS I actually bought a copy of this on DVD in Serbia last year, it was a Ukranian edition, but it was stolen before i got to watch it. So I am doubly grateful to you!

marveletter, I'm happy to hear that the problem was solved... (and pls keep in mind to read Bulgakov's novel too (if you havent done so till now) it is superior to the movie-version (imho:))

Posted By: marveletter Date: 04 May 2007 10:33:51
FNB47,
yes, all downloaded successfully. I've read the novel quite a few times, pick it up every so often and always enjoy it. Visited Bulgakov's house while in Moscow a few years ago. I've read everything i could find by him (in English or German)
Posted By: FNB47 Date: 04 May 2007 16:49:36

marveletter, great... just great. I've never had that chance to visit Bulgakov's house... maybe one day... hope so... who knows...
(thanks for this nice dialog)
