The Commitments is a 1991 film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Roddy Doyle, which tells the story of some unemployed Dubliners who form a soul band. It was directed by Alan Parker from a screenplay adapted by Dick Clement, Ian Le Frenais and Doyle himself. The film was an international co-production between companies in Ireland, the UK, and the United States. It was filmed on location in Dublin. The Commitments stars Robert Arkins as Jimmy Rabbitte, Johnny Murphy as Joey "The Lips" Fagan, and Colm Meaney as Jimmy Rabbitte Sr. The members of the band are played by Michael Aherne, Angeline Ball, Maria Doyle, Dave Finnegan, Bronagh Gallagher, Félim Gormley, Glen Hansard, Dick Massey, Kenneth McCluskey, and Andrew Strong as Deco. The featured song in the movie was "Mustang Sally" by Sir Mack Rice. The film was very successful at the box office and introduced a new generation to rhythm and blues.

Dans les années 1980, Jimmy Rabite, la vingtaine, fait circuler sous le manteau des cassettes audio de soul à North Side, le quartier ouvrier de Dublin. Il est le manager de Outspan Foster et Derek Scully, guitaristes et bassistes récemment viré d'un très consensuel petit groupe d'animation de mariage. Ils ont envie d'arrêter de "galérer" et veulent former un groupe de soul irlandaise. Jimmy Rabite organise chez ses parents, avec qui il habite, un casting pour trouver d'autres membres. Se présente énormément de monde; à peu près tous les jeunes du quartier viennent montrer ce qu'ils savent faire, dans tous les styles (pop, musique folklorique, punk, etc... ) dans toutes les pièces de la maison et jusqu'à dans la salle de bain. La queue dans la rue est tellement longue que certains attendent en croyant acquérir de la drogue au bout. Personne n'a l'air de comprendre que le groupe est censé jouer de la soul. Ce n'est pas vraiment le genre musical le plus répandu dans le quartier...
