The Glass Key is an early example of film noir and a remarkably successful Dashiell Hammett adaptation. The best sequence by far is the marathon beating-up sustained by Alan Ladd in a bout of sado-masochism as William Bendix ('He's a tough baby, he likes this') coyly begs his 'little rubber ball' to bounce back for more. Shot and played with deceptive casualness, the sequence is central to the film, flaunting an erotic undertow that sows continuing doubts throughout. Playing with his usual deadpan as he weaves warily through a maze of political machinations and underworld snares in the service of his boss, Ladd remains equally frozen whether expressing his love for Lake or his loyalty to Brian Donlevy. The result is a teasing sexual ambiguity, considerably enhanced by the fact that Hammett's hero - here callous enough to admit a willingness to let Veronica Lake hang if necessary in furtherance of his aims - has been toughened up by being reduced to a noir cipher for the film.

(What happened to fileserve links? It was the better, faster one...)
R.I.P !
It's the beginning of the end.
remember about 7 or 8 years ago there was a similar (negative) hype for similar reasons, when services like the early napster, early bearshare etc. and some filesharingservices i don't even remember the names of (kazaa?) were under RIAA-scrutiny. what did users do (at least the users in the elvis-forums ;-))) ) .....
they got themselves a newsgroup on yahoo, gmail etc, or founded a small forum with limited registration to reliable users the 'knew' from postings, rented some server space and acted on a sort of 'private event - by invitation only' basis.
IMHO, i dare to say that this hype will cool down as it always has, it's probably already early US-election stuff. they tend to pull that topic out of their drawers from time to time, then stash it back for a couple of years!
i think all of us who believe that the internet should remain FREE for information to and / or sharing with EVERYBODY will eventually find ways to circumvent these restrictions!
whatever is necessary to be done, i am willing to help if i can. let me know via PM so i can give you my mailaddy, SAF!
