La famille Ménard se réunit toutes les semaines "Au Père Tranquille", le café tenu par Henri, le fils ainé. Cette fois-ci, elle s'y réunit pour célébrer le 35e anniversaire de Yolande, épouse de Philippe, le cadet. Pendant que l'on attend la femme d'Henri qui, la veille, vient tout juste de quitter le domicile conjugal, les petites préoccupations de Philippe, politicien local en devenir, prennent rapidement le pas sur les politesses d'usage. Comme sa mère ne manque jamais de le rappeler, celui-ci occupe une position importante dans une grande entreprise de programmation de la région. Elle s'inquiète également du célibat de sa fille Betty, le benjamine, qui vient de quitter secrètement Denis, le serveur apathique du "Père tranquille". Alors que les vielles rancunes ressurgissent, le ton ne cesse de monter jusqu'à l'avènement d'un nouvel ordre familial.

Whilst his brother Philippe is making a name for himself as a high-flying company executive, Henri has to content himself with running the saloon bar he inherited from his father. His sister, Betty, is a tear-away feminist who, to her mother’s chagrin, still hasn’t settled down and started a family, despite being 30 – although she has been having a clandestine relationship with Henri’s barman, Denis. The family come together one Friday evening to celebrate the birthday of Philippe’s wife, Yolande – just as Henri hears the news that his wife is leaving him. The soirée soon turns into a nightmare as the siblings and their matriarchal mother start an interminable round of bickering, each seemingly incapable of responding to the others’ personal crises...

Cada semana, la familia Menard se reúne en el café de Henri y comen todos juntos en el restaurante “Les Ducs de Bretagne”. Hoy, tendría que ser un día de fiesta porque, Yolanda, la nuera celebra su cumpleaños. Pero un incidente viene a trastornar las costumbres. Arlette, la mujer de Henri se ausenta una semana para reflexionar, lo que va a desestabilizar a todos los miembros de la familia…
